ABSTRACT
Studies on attitudes toward Philippine English (PhE) could be considered as one of the earliest endeavors at least in the Outer Circle if not the whole extra-Inner Circle. This chapter discusses attitudes toward English in the Philippines and the local variety, PhE. The earliest mentions of attitudes toward PhE are found in Bautista and Gonzalez. Quantitative work on attitudes toward PhE speaker accent has been conducted with both Eglish as a second language and English as a foreign language respondents. In the desire to fully understand attitudes toward PhE, there is a need to consider the complexities of both language attitudes and speaker evaluations. The position and the fate of PhE within Philippine society indeed was never free from trepidations and dissent. PhE resembles the sociopolitical and cultural contours of other postcolonial Englishes.
