ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at the changes and variations in the English language as it is adopted and used by people who speak other languages at home and in their communities. It examines how English influenced local languages, with a focus on local varieties of Englishes. The chapter discusses both the implications of Sapir-Whorf hypothesis (SWH) on WE and the potential contributions of WE on understanding SWH. SWH focuses on whether and how language impacts cognition and thought. The introduction of Spanish and English, in other words, cannot be naively viewed simply as the imposition of colonial languages which had immense impact on the local linguistic ecologies of the Philippines through these varying periods of colonial subjugation. Similar to the influence of the Spaniards and Americans on Filipino and Philippine English, the British colonization of South Asia also brought about significant social changes in the region, including Pakistan.
