ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the lexical properties of Philippine English (PhE). It describes whether the demographic trend as well as the continuous spread of English globally will have long-lasting linguistic implications and affect the status of English in the Philippines. The chapter presents an overview of the major categories of word-formation in PhE from the more frequent to the more infrequent types of word-formations. Biermeier has repeatedly studied lexical trends in PhE. Biermeier focuses on the mega-corpus GloWbE in his most recent publication. In PhE, compound nouns are used frequently, although there is some disparity between written and spoken English, which indicates that compound nouns seem to be preferred by writers rather than by speakers. Owing to the colonial history of the Philippines, the influence of Spanish loan words on Philippine vocabulary is certainly considerable.
