ABSTRACT

Higher education in Indonesia is currently experiencing a huge transformation. In the past, there were discourses about higher education institutions (HEIs) being teaching-focused versus research-focused. However, the challenge has been elevated into the role of HEIs as agents of knowledge, culture, and technology transfer as well as for economic development. With autonomy, each HEI will have the flexibility in making decisions, managing its assets, carrying out its own business model, collaborating with other parties, innovating, and introducing initiatives to develop the institution’s uniqueness and strength within its particular context. The autonomous status of HEIs in Indonesia has been regarded to be the most conducive for the achievement of the nation’s competitiveness as well as development, as it gives more flexibility to HEIs to innovate and be creative in making entrepreneurial breakthroughs. Internal consolidation within the transformative change is necessary as to increase the impact of change to being an autonomous HEI.
