ABSTRACT

Wildfire is one of the most common diaster events in many countires, including Spain, Portugal, the United States, Canada, Russia and Australia. Wildfires are an ongoing threat to society and increasingly so with climate change. The impact of disasters will become part of the lives of many, and people across the world, and their governments and related agencies, will seek to prepare, quell, mitigate or adapt to these events. Human influence on the climate system is clear, and recent anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases are the highest in history. The concepts of locality and community can be puzzling and misleading, especially when they are used interchangeably. In Australia responsibility for wildfire prevention and management lies with the States and Territories rather than with the Commonwealth government. Governments via state agencies have promoted public communication about disaster events and specifically in relation to communities and fire.
