ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the role of private developer in land development process in the Jabotabek area. It explains the process of urbanisation and reconstruction in the region. The chapter describes the involvement of private sector land developers in the development of Jabotabek, whose activities have significantly affected the recent restructuring process. It assesses the recent real estate boom arguing that there are significant problems that might arise from the activities of the private developers in the region. In early 1970s a new cycle in the restructuring process was started by the institutionalisation of housing production and the involvement of the formal private sector in residential development to accommodate the ever increasing demand for housing. The construction of new towns has increased the production of formal housing by private developers. Private Banks started to offer a wide range of products including attractive term deposit rates.
