ABSTRACT

Given their commitment to supporting distinct ethnic minority populations depending on their designation(s), Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) have approached their curriculum innovatively, adapting to the populations they serve and developing further as demographic shifts occur at their institutions and nationwide. According to the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment, MSIs are more likely than their Predominantly White Institutions to use assessment results for internal purposes as strategic planning, institutional benchmarking, resource allocation and budgeting and prospective student/family communications. While they must partake in assessment for accreditation, this report highlights how MSIs use these data to inform their practices of inclusivity and student engagement to create more effective curricula. Some MSIs rely on innovation to more effectively support their students. Collaboration among students at MSIs is also encouraged to increase student performance. Through their collaborative efforts and institutional ethos of holistically supporting their students, MSIs have a significant role in graduating the nation’s growing, diverse population.
