ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses servant leadership and transformational leadership in the context of Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). Successful MSI leaders exhibit a variety of leadership styles, such as servant leadership, transformational leadership, and bold inclusive leadership. It is clear from the challenges of transformational leadership that everyone does not have the capacity to be a transformational leader, but the same can be said for being a servant leader. Transformational leadership, which is one of the most prominent leadership theories, has been widely used in the business and the educational systems. Between November 2014 and June 2015, stakeholders of the Kellogg Foundation MSI Program conducted a “ten year retrospective examination” of the leadership program to understand its impact and to become better familiar with lessons about leadership for MSIs. Nevertheless, the Kellogg Foundation MSI Program does provide fodder for those interested in leadership development in MSIs, particularly presidential leadership.
