ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the successes and challenges for Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) in global contexts, delving deeper into what MSIs hold for the future of education around the world. To provide some insight into these successes, we look at how MSIs are providing alternatives to higher education, preserving cultures and languages, and empowering marginalized communities all across the globe. One of the largest impacts that MSIs have in other parts of the world is that they provide alternatives that may not exist otherwise. One challenge that persists for many MSIs is the lack of accreditation and/or formal recognition by their given country. Perhaps most surprising about MSIs is that they are making such huge impacts despite having such little resources. As most research tends to be skewed toward the mainstream institutions of the dominant culture, there has been little research in terms of how MSIs are funded and how MSIs are performing, in contexts other than the US.
