ABSTRACT

The main problem of the transition of the labour market in Slovakia is the adjustment to a new structure of the economy. After the Second World War, the labour market in Slovakia existed under a central planning regime which was aimed at full employment. There are various institutional actors on the labour market in Slovakia. Most important are the governmental organisations at various spatial levels, the employer’s organisations, the trade unions and some independent employment services. Agreements of the International Labour Office in relation to the freedom of creating associations, collective bargaining, safety and health of workers, employment policy, discrimination, and protection of wages were ratified in Slovakia during the period 1964–1990. Local governments in Slovakia function at the municipal level and are responsible for technical infrastructure, social and health care, recreation and sports, environment, physical planning, regulation of economic activities, give obligatory position to investment and entrepreneurial activities in the municipality.
