ABSTRACT

This chapter adopts a systems thinking approach and moves away from linear and ‘cause and effect’ methodologies to understand the relationship between protected areas, tourism and community livelihoods. The change of approach follows recognition that tourism is not simply an industry, but an open, dynamic and complex system. In the majority of previous studies, the methodologies/approaches have considered a particular issue or issues in isolation. This chapter draws on studies carried out at Chobe Enclave Conservation Trust and Khama Rhino Sanctuary Trust. The findings provide insights for devising adaptability measures to reconcile conflicts that exist between protected areas, tourism and community livelihoods.
