ABSTRACT

Since 1978, Canada’s national network of biosphere reserves (BRs) has grown steadily, now including a vibrant, diverse and dynamic group of 18 sites that represent the country’s geographic, climatic, ecological, economic, and cultural diversity. This chapter speaks to how Canadian BRs are working to meet the MAB programme objectives, the challenges faced by Canadian BRs, and their connections with the World Network of BRs. It also highlights the special context of reconciliation in Canada in which BRs are leading examples of how to bring together multiple communities and cultures to promote reconciliation, not just between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples, but also between society and nature – the principle at the heart of the MAB Programme.
