ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the processes and issues that representatives from two different professional organisations have considered and addressed in their guidelines. The first section of the chapter is written by Hannah Farndon and Nicola Gale from the British Psychological Society (BPS) and the second section is by Sarah Niblock of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). While there are similarities in their approaches there are also differences in how the task has been approached. The two organisations are at differing points in the cycle of updating their guidelines on professional, ethical and research practice. Both organisations draw attention to the changing environment and the associated range of challenges and raise the issue of why things go wrong. The BACP were invited to contribute to the chapter on guidelines, unfortunately the timing coincided with them undertaking a major reorganisation around their professional and ethical codes and therefore they had to decline this invitation.
