ABSTRACT

China’s foreign trade expansion has become a fashionable subject of awe for businessmen and economists alike. The performance of China’s trade sector – as her bridgehead to the outside world – is of prime interest to the international business community. China holds shares in world trade of over 50 per cent in a considerable and growing number of manufactures. Declarations include a field on the location of the domestic producer or consumer. It should be noted that this information does not always appear to be reliable, as goods may be resold again to other locations. The multiplication of Chinese enterprises directly involved in exports and imports is one of the most visible signs of China’s foreign trade expansion. A ranking of Chinese exporters and importers points to a comparatively low degree of concentration. The uneven contribution of China’s provinces to national trade is well known.
