ABSTRACT

This chapter traces how three different kinds of teachers (with different outlooks) are likely to respond differently to the new digital situation. It clarifies the construction and validity of these three kinds of teachers; it is only important to stress that the three are ideal types and thus theoretical constructs, making it possible to say something general but at the same time distinguishing between different kinds of teachers and their responses. The three ideal types are the engineers, who are likely to use digital media to install new control systems; the gardeners, who are likely to use new digital tools to facilitate their student’s self-development; and the challengers, who are likely to develop new spaces for confronting their students with difficult otherness. Seen from a non-deterministic perspective, it is wrong to talk about the impact of digitalization in an unconditional deterministic way.
