ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the role of organisational culture and heritage in shaping local newspaper organisations. It approaches the study of the turbulent contemporary post-digital era by providing a case study analysis of the internal environments of local newspapers in the South East region of the United Kingdom. Culture is a fundamental factor in framing and influencing an organisation; therefore, understanding a local news organisation's culture, and how it is shaped by unconscious beliefs, enables us to determine the influence of those on the digitalisation strategy. The chapter discusses how organisational culture has influenced local newspaper organisations and how organisational culture has affected the way companies responded to changes in the digital age. It draws on data drawn from case studies of two newspaper organisations gathered via: employee interviews, pre-existing company data and observational insight.
