ABSTRACT

The Basque Country – the land where Basque people live – is divided between those who consider it a region of Spain or France and those who claim its independence. Some Basque people feel just Basque, while others feel French or Spanish. This is why the Basque Country is undergoing a conflict of identity. The country is divided into three administrative entities: the continental Basque Country in the territory of France, which has practically no institutional recognition; Navarre; and the Basque Autonomous Community, which, since 1979, are two separate autonomous administrative regions in the territory of Spain. In the early 1980s, the Basque Autonomous Government promoted public radio and television in the Basque language. Confusion over territory also arose for both mediums when reporting on issues which relate to Spain as a nation.
