ABSTRACT

In our late modern society, there has been a de-traditionalization of public history and heritagization. Groups of enthusiasts, outside the established heritage institutions, often take it upon themselves to preserve a particular aspect of their culture in effect establishing a site of memory. I present two recent examples of fan-driven sites of memory related to the Danish film franchise The Olsen Gang (Olsen-banden). The appearance of such fan-driven sites points to a need within the heritage audience that is not met by the established heritage institutions and it can be argued that they offer an antihegemonic form of heritage experience.
