ABSTRACT

In the course of the freedom struggle against British rule in India, almost every section of the society participated and contributed their might for the cause of freedom in their own capacities. The case of the Kukis of Northeast India in general and Manipur and its adjoining areas in particular, was one amongst them. It was the belief of the colonial authority that the Anglo-Kuki War could be suppressed without losing much time, but contrary to their official estimation, the War dragged on far beyond their calculations, thus becoming one of the longest wars fought in the British Eastern Frontier. The chapter discusses the importance of War Conclaves, which were held ahead of the Anglo-Kuki War of 1917–1919. It also deliberates the reasons that bound the Kukis to steadfastly face a mighty power at a time when it was said that ‘there is no sunset in the British Empire’, come what may for the cause of freedom.
