ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book points to the continuing importance of social dialog as a legacy of Peronist support for trade unions and regulated labor relations in Argentina. It also points to the ‘fissured’ nature of the industry as main contractors put an increasing distance between themselves and the physical process of construction, retaining overall management of the operation but relying on subcontractors – and on a more extended contractual chain – for contract delivery. The book highlights the importance of and the challenges to the continuing legacy of tripartite structures and social dialog. It outlines the major changes taking place in construction work and employment and allows the viewpoint of migrant workers, who are central to urban development, to emerge.
