ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the trends main institutional features and employment practices in the Russian construction sector. It focuses on recruitment, employment relations and work organization to understand their impact on the quality of the labor process and workers' well-being. The Russian construction sector, like construction elsewhere, employs a high proportion of migrant labor and employment arrangements follow stratification along ethno-national lines. The chapter also discusses the case study capturing the diversity in working conditions, pay, skills and occupational safety experienced by workers in a highly informal and segmented labor market. The subject of occupational health and safety represents the most dramatic and controversial aspect in the regulation and management of a Russian construction.
