ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews how a teacher and program manager can help learners overcome the isolation and better prepare them to learn online. Online isolation can be combated with three efforts: lifestyle changes; encouraging community building; and designing a learning experience. Some US states require out-of-state students to have a residency requirement. This means they must spend a certain amount of time on the campus or in the organization’s learning center. Connecting in a community, sharing ideas, and even meeting in person can help combat isolation in online learning. Taking advantage of technology tools and making new tools available can also help. However, a learner’s lifestyle should be explored and possibly changed. Order and organization are the keys to any successful online learning endeavor.
