ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the limitations of existing approaches to education abroad and explores different interpretations of and approaches to curriculum integration in the context of recent trends in international higher education, and reimagines education abroad as a rich learning resource for all faculty, staff and students for the entire institution and the communities it serves. Education abroad is seen as an important component of an international education by governments and universities in countries across the world. Education abroad touches a small minority of students, and its impact on individuals is variable. Hence education abroad is increasingly regarded as an insufficient approach to internationalizing student learning unless it is integrated into the curriculum in such a way that it ensures students maximize their learning from their own education abroad experience and also bring that learning home to enrich the learning of their peers, the majority of whom will not have had the benefit of that experience abroad.
