ABSTRACT

The Beth Johnson Foundation (BJF) has played a significant overarching role in the development of Intergenerational Practice in the UK and elsewhere in the past 20 or so years. This chapter outlines a brief history of that role and the definitions, frameworks and theory through which Intergenerational Practice has since developed. The chapter then reflects on the more recent experience of BJF operating as Linking Generations NI (LGNI) in Northern Ireland, using a community-based approach to connecting generations in order to release resources in neighbourhoods for the benefit of individuals, communities and society. These practice-based reflections are nestled within the World Health Organisation’s Age-friendly movement journey to date in the UK and Ireland. The chapter argues that a broad and over-arching definition of IP, which incorporates an all-age approach and the viewing of societal problems through an all-age lens, is essential in today’s society.
