ABSTRACT

In this chapter, autoethnography is introduced as a social science qualitative research method. While highlighting the distinctive presence of self at the center of the research process, the author emphasizes that autoethnography does not look at the self in a sociocultural vacuum. Instead, the self is explored in relation to others within their interactive contexts, whether autoethnography is pursued in an individually driven format (IAE) or a collaboratively driven autoethnography (CAE). The author compares IAE and CAE, focusing on the following five questions: (a) When is IAE or CAE appropriate for an autoethnography project? (b) How can a research topic and investigative model be selected for IAE or CAE? (c) How can data be collected, analyzed, and interpreted similarly or differently for IAE and CAE? (d) How can IAE or CAE be presented in writing? (e) How can IAE and CAE be conducted and produced ethically?
