ABSTRACT

Ireland, along with other countries including Singapore, Scotland and the Netherlands, has consistently punched above its weight in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI). Governments tailor policies in taxation, education, infrastructure and technology, and the IDA – Ireland’s inward investment agency – has done a great job selling the country’s proposition to major corporations. Looking forward it appears the game will only get tougher. To hold on to what they have and continue to win a disproportionate share of new FDI, countries need a multi-dimensional response. This chapter outlines what this means, and describes an eight-year partnership of consultants with the leadership team of Adelon Ireland. It tells the story of how Adelon Ireland took an active role in ensuring the growth and sustainability of their site, and shows the positive impact of their commitment – on the levels of performance, investment and employment at the site – over time.
