ABSTRACT

Jim Collins leapt to fame with his joint work with Jerry Porras, Built to Last, in the late 1990s. Collins’ next major research was published as Good to Great in 2001. Collins produced a booklet in 2006 on the application of Good to Great principles in the social sectors, e.g., sport and other not-for-profit organisations.

Funding from the National Lottery was introduced into British sport (and many other worthwhile causes) in 1998. One of the principal objectives was to give the sports the opportunity to modernise their structures, governance and processes in the same way that many UK businesses had done over the preceding decade. This chapter’s case study outlines how two sports, England Netball and British Basketball, responded to the challenge and, in so doing, exhibited the features of a ‘Good to Great’ organisation.
