ABSTRACT

Traditional approaches to strategic management were and would be found wanting in the face of the 2008 recession. The directors of Genesis developed an approach to strategic management that enabled many of its clients to address the future with confidence. The principles of this approach are outlined in this chapter.

UPM Kymmene, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of paper, is one example of where ‘new age’ strategic management has been applied. Their case study describes how they worked in partnership with Genesis consultants at a number of their locations from Irvine in Scotland to Helsinki, London and Chicago. The case study outlines the changes that took place to improve their collective performance and position in the industry and to change traditional business models in an industry under pressure.
