ABSTRACT

Recently, with the development of knowledge of the neuroscience of leadership and performance, we have been able to identify clearly the dominant drivers of motivation. The neuroscience and psychology agree. When leaders co-create a clear and meaningful purpose with their teams, talk about purpose instead of key performance indicators and objectives, and connect people’s personal values to purpose – they get truly amazing results.

In this chapter Fiona Gifford, a fellow director with Alistair Gray at Genesis, summarises the psychological and neuroscientific features that explain the ‘Power of Purpose’. In the three case studies that follow she outlines how different organisations transformed performance, culture and leadership over a period of several years through improved teamwork, motivation and collaboration amongst their people.
