ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide a modest contribution to the assessment of prospects for stemming this economic leakage for the benefit of the local population. It focuses on a more extensive research project, reported in Peter Midmore, N. Parrott et al. which was designed to investigate this potential and the more subtle linkages which might promote better integration between agriculture and tourism in the case of south Pembrokeshire, situated in the most south-westerly part of Wales. The chapter explores the main findings of the investigative work undertaken in the study area. It summarizes of prospects for enhancing incomes and employment, through the closer harmonisation of agriculture and tourism in this marginal region. Agriculture, which provides around eight percent of total employment, remains a significant element of local economic activity. In peripheral rural areas, there has always been a close relationship between local economic activity and the natural environment.
