ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a portrait of adopted children under 18 in the US, comparing findings from Census 2000 with the 5-year American Community Survey data (2013–2017). These large-scale, nationally representative data sets are used to provide basic estimates of internationally adopted children and transracially adopted children. A smaller percentage of the householder’s children under 18 are adopted in 2013–2017 than in 2000 – 2.2 percent compared with 2.5 percent. In 2013–2017, there were 469,600 transracially adopted children under 18, or 32.6 percent of adopted children under 18. In 2013–2017, 12.1 percent of adopted children under 18 were internationally adopted.
