ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of post-adoption services. Specific attention is given to post-adoption service needs, availability, and access for children adopted from the child welfare system into non-relative or kinship placements, as well as domestic and international/intercountry adoptive placements. It also reviews barriers to access according to situational and socio-demographic characteristics of children and families. We conclude by highlighting the need for targeted adoptive family assessments in order to ensure families are provided with the most appropriate and effective supports in caring for their adoptive children, as well as recommendations for addressing policy and practice implications for enhanced provision and utilization of post-adoption services.
