ABSTRACT

Adoption has been shown to be an effective intervention, offering children the possibility of recovery and healthy development within an adoptive family. Nevertheless, it presents unique and complex challenges that can cause difficulties for adoptees and their families, while also providing the opportunity to grow stronger. These challenges are chiefly related to emotional bonds and family integration, psychosocial development and adjustment, reconciliation with origins and personal history, and the ability to deal with the stress associated with these processes. The dramatic increase in international adoption, especially in Spain, has led to important advances in research in these areas, which are reviewed in this chapter.
