ABSTRACT

The UK water industry is currently investing significantly in improving the quality of our rivers, estuaries and coasts. It is important to ensure that investment is targeted at those areas where most environmental benefit can be achieved, particularly in view of the large sums of money involved. Models are effective management tools and, as such, are vital components of any management strategy to bring about both short and long term improvements in water quality. The industry has long recognized the role of computer models and has been responsible for developing or promoting the development of a wide range of models, each tailored to particular requirements. The need for advanced models is set to continue in a climate where improving water quality is high on the agenda. This paper addresses those areas of estuary modelling which WRc perceive to be important over the next few years.
