ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides a comparative perspective by dealing with many of the European countries. It argues by including experiences gained in countries such as the US and Australia and the lessons that they provide for Europe. The book explores the relationships between European employment systems and welfare state regimes in order to clarify the multifaceted and uncertain nature of these connections and to identify the various policy options and potential policy contradictions confronting European countries. Many observers believe that not since the 1940s has there been such uncertainty within and about Europe. However, in sharp contrast to the collapse of Eastern Europe during the past decade, the legitimacy of the Western European welfare state is not at issue at this point. There is no doubt that the employment crisis in Europe can only be solved through bold, new, and imaginative solutions.
