ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on leadership and diversity arose out of the personal experience of the first editor, in her leadership role as Chair of the Division of Counselling Psychology. The second editor, born and raised in South Africa, was inspired to bring the voices of psychologists from different backgrounds together in a collection of chapters that allows for their experiences and stories to be told. There are very few people of colour within leadership positions, and the varied reflections from the contributors highlight that diversity is about a multitude of important areas such as race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, power, social justice, equality, disability, identity, the intersection of these areas and so much more. The book examines the progression in the direction of a more pluralistic/integrative practice, moving away from traditional orientations involving specific ways of working.
