ABSTRACT

Mixed methods case study is an approach to inquiry that offers researchers the opportunity to harness the strengths of both mixed methods and case study methodologies to understand complex phenomena and real-life contexts in deep and nuanced ways. Researchers who choose to use this approach face the challenge of navigating the quantitative, qualitative, integration, and case-based aspects of the study design. This chapter begins with an overview of the characterization of mixed methods case study as found in the literature, including the benefits and challenges of this mixed methods approach. From there, 5 strategies that facilitate intentional planning for integration are presented. Each strategy is discussed in the context of mixed methods case study, along with examples from the literature of how each has been used productively within mixed methods case studies. The chapter concludes with recommendations for scholars who are designing or reviewing studies that implement a mixed methods case study approach.
