ABSTRACT

Joint displays are a visual means of facilitating and representing the integration of qualitative and quantitative research in mixed methods research. Joint displays offer one potential solution to the problem of achieving meaningful integration by making integration clear and concrete. Researchers can use joint displays to facilitate integrated analyses when (a) planning a study, (b) engaging in the cognitive process of integration as joint display analysis, and (c) representing integration for interpretation. The purpose of this chapter is to describe step by step how to develop joint displays for planning mixed data collection and conducting mixed methods integrative analysis. The chapter also provides variations in joint display options for major mixed methods designs. For each of these designs, the chapter includes templates to think about the development of a joint display, a box with step-by-step instructions, and references to published joint displays available in the literature.
