ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the historical background and characteristics of mixed methods practices in Chinese educational research, as well as opportunities and challenges with respect to expanding the use of more fully integrated mixed methods research studies in China. The chapter begins with an overview of the evolution of educational research methodologies in China, and highlights the importance of promoting mixed methods and integrated applications. Because mixed methods promotion should be informed by understanding the status quo, current practices are described by presenting published literature, with a focus on mixed methods research in Chinese language, along with a discussion of the potential for using more integrated methods to address questions likely to be pursued by Chinese scholars. The chapter concludes by identifying key opportunities and challenges that researchers face when conducting integrated mixed methods educational research in the Chinese context.
