ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the main factors that are associated with the success of K-pop on the world stage, followed by a critical review of previous studies that have examined the roles and features of English used by K-pop bands. It examines the roles and features of English used by BTS to add new knowledge to the existing literature. Talented and fashionable pop idol singers and dancers in K-pop groups have become the global icons of the latest teenage consumer trends in the music industry. K-pop has been re-configured and re-arranged from its origins and contemporary K-pop idols are performers strategically appearing across various media platforms such as television stations, social media sites, live and on holographic stages. The seven-member K-pop boy group BTS has been writing a new chapter in K-pop history. Though a number of groups had achieved some amount of mainstream recognition in global media prior to BTS, the popularity of K-pop remained largely restricted to Asian regions.
