ABSTRACT

The theme of the book is interpreted through the lens of the artist-teacher in the role of cultural mediator, an individual who mediates musical engagements for learners. The multi-dimensional, multi-positional and potentially transformative nature of cultural mediation on the part of the artist-teacher is explored from the following perspectives: Enacting cultural leadership; engaging with music as cultural practice; mediating cultures of home and school; shaping communal identity; bridging musical cultures; animating culture; innovating practice, expanding knowledge; and transforming places and people. The artist-teacher functioning as cultural mediator is true to the nature of music making as a dynamic form of cultural life enabling music learners, nurturing creativity, and animating the significances of music in and for life.
