ABSTRACT
The Great Big Sea came along at a point when a Canadian province was going through a kind of renaissance of their folk music and stuff and it was a perfect time for a band like Great Big Sea to come along and be the main conduit for that renaissance and so we started introducing old Newfoundland folk songs to a younger generation. The other thing in terms of the culture of it – just again very practically by default because Newfoundland is such a small population and its place in history is kind of isolated from all over the world, all over Canada, all over the United States, and all over Europe – the first thing so many people heard from Newfoundland.
