ABSTRACT

One of the most important aspects of the initial interview is the giving of information as it would appear that many clients are singularly uninformed about stuttering and therapy. In studying the icebergs, it becomes possible to explain the rationale for various approaches to the treatment of stuttering, that is the ‘speak more fluently’ and ‘stutter more fluently’ theories of therapy. Such explanation helps to make the role of previous therapy relevant, whilst changes in current therapy are anticipated. The chapter offeres a client-orientated, multi-variant approach to the treatment of very severe stutterers. For the symptoms that identify the very severe stutterer reference can be made to the sizeable body of literature giving qualitative and/or quantitative findings correlating certain behaviours and stuttering severity. Daily ‘homework’ is essential, as one hour per week is insufficient therapy for the very severe stutterer.
