ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the topography of each course in terms of a comparison between number of hours, at which stage training takes place and its relationship with other subjects. In Britain and Ireland there are several courses in speech therapy at present in progress. The actual structure of speech therapy courses is often, but not always, divided into time spent on developmental versus acquired disorders and disorders in childhood versus disorders in adults. Cardiff School of Speech Therapy stresses that practical and experimental phonetics and psychology make a substantial contribution to the stuttering syllabus. Other areas of treatment and management include the relative advantages of individual versus group, and weekly versus intensive therapy. The City of Birmingham Polytechnic, the University of Sheffield and the University, of Manchester cover the subject in about 25 hours, while, honours students at Jordanhill College of Education receive as many as 75 hours teaching if they choose to specialise in stuttering.
