ABSTRACT

The aim of the intensive programme was to help the stutterers to acquire speech which would be considered normal by a listener. Several stutterers were randomly allocated to a technique or a personal construct therapy group. The present programme aims to teach the clients the skill of fluent speech and then to help and support them as they move towards psychological reconstruction. A form of behaviour therapy is used to teach prolonged speech (PS) and personal construct therapy is used to assist the clients in their efforts towards becoming fluent people. The residential course has the advantage that clients can use PS with each other all day and all evening, even at the very slow speeds, and do not have to go home and suffer unkind remarks which can undo all the benefit from a day’s work.
