ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a way of viewing people who have interiorised their stuttering, as well as a therapy approach that incorporates psychotherapy and speech-therapy techniques. Role-play has been extensively described as part of the group-therapy process. Group therapy has the advantage of helping to reduce feelings of isolation amongst clients. Reality testing is an important theme in therapy with interiorised stutterers; so much of their avoidance is based on their predictions that they will stutter. With most therapy, we like our clients to see the continuity between the therapy environment and the outside world, so that they can more easily transfer what they learn inside therapy to their own lives outside. Preparing clients for the knock-on effects of therapy and helping them to find ways of easing the worries of those close to them, can prevent the client from feeling pressured into not changing.
