ABSTRACT

Assets Coming Together for Youth is a collaborative university-community research study designed to understand youth perspectives and encourage positive youth engagement in the stigmatized Jane-Finch community, located in Toronto, Canada. This chapter presents the findings from the research conducted with youth who participated in a PhotoVoice project taking images that captured their understanding of and experiences with well-being. The data presented in this paper indicate that the photos that youth took fall under two themes: factors that contribute positively to their sense of well-being, and those factors that detract from well-being. In general, the youth captured the absence of well-being in the physical environment, education, employment, and health/nutrition of their community. Overall, this paper demonstrates that youth are critical actors in the production and consumption of resources that facilitate or distract from community well-being.
