ABSTRACT

The studied communities have been purposely selected for their different agroecological settings, and in different locations with respect to their accessibility from and to urban centres - viz. the Municipality of Yogyakarta and capitals of Districts. The studied communities have experienced important physical and socioeconomic transformations. Government employees are more willing to accept posts in certain rural communities which, prior to the development of communications were very much isolated. This process has contributed to the socioeconomic development of rural communities. Some of the studied communities are strongly linked to the urban areas, not only in terms of flow of labour but also of commodities. Growing regional integration, in particular in the Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, bears a considerable impact on rural development at the local level. Murtigading-Srigading has benefited less from the increasing regional integration and rising rural-urban linkages than Pendowoharjo.
