ABSTRACT
Reconsidering the intercultural project requires us to go further than Latrell (cited by Schechner 2006, p. 46) when he proposes that “other cultures are not passive receivers of Western ideas … intercultural borrowing is not simply a one-way process … (indigenous) cultures interpret what they borrow”. From a contemporary postcolonial perspective, I argue that the indigenous culture not only interprets what is borrowed from the hegemonic Western culture, but borrows what it wants on its own terms. This notion is essential when investigating intercultural actor training in South Africa today.
