ABSTRACT

The key functions and major structures of the gastrointestinal system are identified. Insight into how disordered physiology can cause a medical emergency, and the nurse’s role in recognising and responding appropriately to patients with acute gastrointestinal problems is provided. The roles of the stomach, pancreas, liver and bowel, relating acute gastrointestinal problems arising from disordered pathophysiology, are described. Common gastrointestinal emergencies are presented, and the nurse’s role in undertaking an assessment of the abdomen is outlined.
